How To Make Money As A Coach Or Consultant

So you're ready to start coaching or consulting, but you're worried about how to start making money? Keep reading and I'll show you how to cut through all the fluff and start getting clients ASAP. You don't need a huge following to start making money as a consultant. In fact, you only need to do a few things that will drastically increase your money-making potential. By the end of this article, you'll learn the first four steps that I teach my clients to help them start making money quickly.


Spread the Word

The first step to make more money is to implement your own advice and document it. Just because you are just starting out with a coaching business does not mean that you don't have valuable things to share! So I recommend something as simple as making your own Instagram business account. I'm not saying that you have to go ahead and build a website right now. Just having a place on the internet that shows what you do and that you're going to teach someone to do the same things is going to go so far. 

Example time! If you are a health coach and you teach people how to live a healthier life, then you should be posting more about gut health, targeted workouts, and any other relevant content. Posting this information will position you as a source of knowledge and they will become confident in looking to you for answers. Building this foundation will make you their go-to guide and they’ll be happy to hand over their money so you can solve their problem

Utilize your Network

The second step is to find the people you already know and trust you. This is the easiest thing you can do with your current social profiles right now. So go on Facebook, Instagram, or whatever is your preferred platform, and tell your followers that you are starting a new endeavor. Tell them if they need help with the problem that you are trying to solve for ‘them, that they should definitely contact you. This is something that can be easily done inside a short Instagram story. 

Another example time! Let’s say you’re a financial consultant with your own coaching business. Your Instagram story should say something along these lines: "Hey guys, I'm opening up a new money management or money consulting company. If you have questions about how to save money properly or how to get funding for your business, I would love to talk to you. Reach out to me by sending me a DM, or by following my business Instagram account." 

Sounds super easy because it is! Posting a short story will start getting people to know that you exist and that you can help them. It's going to be an amazing, easy thing for you to start doing right away. And because these people have already been following you, and they are already a bit more invested in you than some regular person down the street. They are going to be more likely to quickly do the easiest form of coaching, which is strategy calls. Doing one on one strategy calls is the easiest way to validate any high ticket offers that you're thinking about doing in the future. This is going to be a place where you can learn more about your ideal customer, and easily help them with the problem that they're trying to solve and get those testimonials.

(Social) Proof is in the Pudding

The third step is to create social proof around your business. Social proof is going to come from case studies, those testimonials that you're going to be gathering from your one on one strategy calls. Maybe you're even making some type of beta group or introductory class. Taking people in at a reduced amount will help build these types of groups and will also help increase your network. Getting that social proof from people that know and trust you is going to allow you to take their own words and put it on your website or social platforms.

As you're gathering testimonials or reviews from your actual clients, I want you to start creating notes in the back of your head about how they describe their pain points and their struggles. Get to know a little bit more about them because you are actually framing and creating your ideal client. It’s important to listen to how they explain their current status, their problems, and their concerns and then use it to create more content. 

This brings me to my very last point - the fourth step.

Create Valuable Content

Use the conversations you have with clients to create content that matters. While you’re coaching, take notes on what questions they ask and the subjects that seem to cause the most stress or confusion. These points are what you should focus on when creating new resources because if one person is asking the question then there are bound to be others out there! 

The notes you take will give you a lot of ammo for live streams, Instagram posts, Instagram stories, IGTVs - really any platform you utilize the most. This is where you'll start building your brand and creating systems to automate leads (we’ll dive into this topic in upcoming articles so stay tuned!).
